What is the AOW?

AOW MEANS ALGEMENE OUDERDOMS-WET

The AOW is a law that ensures that you receive a payment from the government when you reach the age of entitlement to the AOW retirement. The AOW is therefore a basic pension from the Dutch government. The timing of the payment depends on your current age and life expectancy. If your life expectancy increases, it will take longer before you receive a payout from the AOW. You must reach the age of 67 before you receive any income from the AOW. You will receive an AOW based on the number of years you have lived in the Netherlands: so if you have not lived in the Netherlands for part of your life, this part will be deducted from your AOW payment. The Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB) pays the AOW. Would you like to know more about this?
