In the Netherlands, child benefit (kinderbijslag) is a social allowance that has been granted since 1941 as a supplement to your child’s living expenses. You receive child benefit for your child every quarter. Child benefit stops when your child turns 18. Sometimes child benefit stops earlier. For example, if your child stops going to school. You can apply for child benefit at the Sociale Verzekeringsbank (SVB). If you already receive child benefit and your next child is born in the Netherlands, you do not have to do anything. In some cases, you can claim child benefit if you or your child live abroad.
